We just go back from a 23 day trip through Cabria and Sicily. My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay at Cherrye's lovely B & B, Il Cedro in Catanzaro. It was so good to hear her voice again.

My hat goes off the the people of Calabria who were so helpful and kind. Their acceptance of my self taught Italian and the advice and directions they gave us made our trip so wonderful.

Love the podcast, and can't wait for the next episode.

Ciao Amy, thanks for the other vocab word - truzzi - we hadn't heard of it. Just a note we weren't implying the origin of tamarro is from Naples, not sure where that was mentioned.

Here is a Q & A exchange from Facebook:

G.f. Roberts: It's believed that the Etruscans had aqueducts, on some scale. Where can one be seen?

Mary Jane Cryan: Yes, their canalization for water were amazing. We have examples throughout the Vetralla area, also at Veio (now Isola Farnese) Even our irrigation of our olive groves dates from Etruscan times.

Ms. Cryan - Thanks for the information! I had forgotten all about La Loggetta, frankly. I found it years ago when I started looking into my grandfather's family history - and it was one of the items that spurred me to learn Italian - but for some reason I'd completely forgotten about it. I even sent an email to someone there, but very soon afterward we had many technical issues with our computers and I don't know if they replied. If they did and I missed it, I apologize. I didn't re-initiate the conversation as I didn't want to be pushy.

My grandfather was Joseph Mezzetti, born in Piansano in 1893. He emigrated to the United States in 1913 and died in 1950 due to complications from asthma. Honestly, not much more is known about his history except for (possibly apocryphal) anecdotes told by my father.

I would love to get copies of the newsletter. The website appears to be momentarily "chiuso per manutenzione", but I will try again soon.

Thanks again!

Dear Michael, I write-in Italian - for a lovely local magazine La Loggetta which is all about this area and specifically about Piansano.
Would you like a copy of the magazine? contact Antonio Mattei, the editor at info@laloggetta.it - he will probably connect you with any relatives still there. They have a website with past issues archived ...and in English too, since many, many people like you had relatives who left Piansano to emigrate abroad.
They will be so happy to make contact with you...what is the family name ?

I just listened to this podcast this morning and I'm going to have to order Ms. Cryan's book.

My grandfather--whom I had never met--was born and raised in Piansano, Italy - a small comune right in the middle of the area covered in the podcast. I have never been to Italy (though I will someday - it's difficult at this time, having young children and limited resources), but I have tried to gather as much information about this particular area as I could, being greatly interested in how my grandfather and his family would have lived. I even taught myself Italian to aid in my research. As Ms. Cryan pointed out (and unfortunately for me), the area is rather "undiscovered" - which means that there is very little information available online about the area.

When I do visit Italy someday, my intention has always been to spend the requisite time in Rome, then head off to Piansano and the surrounding area. This book should greatly help in planning that part of the trip.

Hi Michele, did you see the comment in the show notes? It's a bug in the recording software we're working with the developers to resolve.

Love the podcast, great information. Please don't type while recording, it's kind of hard to focus on what someone is saying with the typing noise in the background.

Thank you Cinzia for all your suggestions to impress my suocera and for my wedding. I can't wait to eat all of these delicious things. I may need to buy a wedding dress that's a tad too big so I can eat to my hearts content on my wedding day! No worries about my Italian man, he's a wonderful person and he also knows what I'm capable of....haha scherzo! But seriously, we are both very lucky and very happy.
On a side note, the baker from New Jersey that is famous for his show "Cake Boss" did an episode in Altamura, Puglia because that's where his parents are from. I've been dreaming about that bread ever since I saw the episode!
Ciao ladies and thanks again!

I think the vast majority of Italian theatres screen dubbed American films. However, in Rome's Piazza della Repubblica there's a very large and very modern movie theatre that shows undubbed English language films.

I love watching italian films outside of italy, as they always show the very best ones. Since being in italy i find it very hit and miss with italian films. is there any website (italian or english) that separates the 'good' films from the usual 'cheesy/comedy' ones that seem to be ever so prevalent?

I especially enjoyed the recent episode on Umbria, one of my favorite under-discovered regions. I too love Orvieto. The Duomo exterior is a stunning achievement, but Signorelli's frescoes in the side-chapel are haunting and should not be missed! (nominal admission fee)

I think Rick Steves recommended Civita di Bagnoreggio a few years ago, so there are a few more tourists than there used to be. Still, the walk to the city across a footbridge is a most memorable experience and shouldn't be missed.

Umbria is especially famous for its hill towns; I especially like Amelia. It's a quiet, town with amazing views across the Umbrian countryside. There are significant Roman remains and a most-interesting archeological museum, as well as some delicious gelato in the shop at the foot of the hill.

A true labor of love is Bill Thayer's online guide to "Walking in Umbria." There's nary a square-inch of the region he doesn't know. His site is: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Places/Europe/Italy/Umbria/walking.html It's an extraordinary resource for anyone planning a trip to Umbria.

Finally, it's officially in Lazio, but the Bomarzo Park is one of the most unusual sites anywhere. Stone monsters, stone carvings drawn from Ovid's "Metamorphoses," and lovely grounds to stroll. Kids love it! http://www.bomarzo.net/

I love Umbria! It's a very interesting place, with so much to do and beautiful scenery. I've only been to Orvieto and Narni so far, but they are absolutely gorgeous and I'm really happy that they got a mention. I also love salsicce di cinghiale from Norcia as well, so this really podcast really nailed it for me. I'm going to have to go to Umbria the next time I'm back in Lazio :-)

Today was the first day that I listened to your podcast and it's nice to be able to relate to some of what was talked about in your latest one (Jan 10th).

My comment is from the girl who asked what to expect when one first comes to Italy be it for living or for a short term stay. I agree with Michelle that the language factor is huge and honestly without knowing the language, life in Italy becomes much more difficult and I dont know how some people here exist without knowing Italian. Napoli, where I live now, is a city where many people have a basic vocabulary of English but few can keep up with native English speakers.

What is also a bit of a culture shock is the behavior of Italians which for a person who comes from a country where customer service is key as well as manners (or whatever your perception is of "la buona educazione") then Italy can be a bit overwhelming. Italians don't put up a front as much as Americans in my opinion and often when you approach someone who works with the public you will most likely find their behavior different as opposed to their US counterparts (or other Anglo countries). Less sweetened I think puts it best. To put it best, some even seem annoyed that you are asking them something, but I've gotten used to it. Many however seem annoyed but then turn out to be quite helpful. I usually don't mind asking people here for any kind of information because God knows I get asked things everyday, probably because I am of napoletano orgin.

Lastly, I would just say that Italy is a different world than the USA and many other places. The South, where I live is even noticeably different than the North. You have to come and experience it to understand.

Buon Natale, I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work putting this terrific podcast together; including the links in the show notes. I have enjoyed each and every podcast. On my lunch break, I go for a (power) walk to get away from workplace stress; and nothing makes me happier to listen (sometimes several times over) to your show. Keep up the good work....and I'm looking forward to #28! Cheers, Catherine

Loved hearing Mark's story about looking for an opportunity to cook while on vacation in Italy. I've had a similar desire while spending time in Spoleto and enjoying meals at our favorite osteria - Osteria del Trivio. Next time I'm there, I think I WILL ask Mirella to teach me to make her wonderful gnocchi con funghi - simply delicious. Your story has given me courage to ask!

Great interview. The book sounds awesome. Mark's experience is something I'd love to do with husband. He's the cook, I'm the language student. It is on my Amazon wish list, in case I don't win. :^)

Haha, love that you featured Fabri Fibra. He's big news right now on the Rome underground scene because his latest video heavily featured the Roman street artist JB Rock creating a giant poster in the background while he rapped.

I LOVED Mark Leslie's experience - I've been thinking about that exact thing, but hadn't heard of any suggestions as to the 'how to' - and frankly I was probably 'scared' of trying that sort of thing... Now, I'm even more excited about that tpye of 'in-home' scenerio. Great podcast ladies - I love them all.. Keep up the great job. Thanks.

I'm really enjoying your podcasts. They're fun as well as informative.

I'm finally going back to Italy - first time since 1988 and am travelling with a friend who cannot eat garlic. Any suggestions for dishes without garlic, or websites where she might find out more?

Thanks for all your entertaining tips and news,
Anne

I'm learning so much about Italy and my Italian heritage from your podcast. My husband and I are planning a trip to my ancestoral home, Castelfondo (a tiny village in the Trentino-Alto Adige region) sometime in 2012. But after hearing this podcast, I'm thinking a mini trip to Rome for next Christmas would also be exciting. Thanks and keep up the great banter!

Kathy reminded me of my Christmas visit to Rome - I yanked my son out of bed at 11:55pm on Christmas eve and we ran into the nearest church to observe midnight Mass. We joined 15 or so other people in the cold, spare space for the most somber, least joyful celebration I could imagine! Not typical of Rome on Christmas Eve, I'm sure, just the luck of the draw.
Thank you for your podcasts, I enjoy every one.

My grandmother was born in Naples and this year we spent a day exploring and visiting the Stato Civile e the Stato Archive trying to find more information about her family village. Standing on the hilltop overlooking the Bay of Naples, the spot where all of our families left from, some never to return, was a very emotional moment. We visit Italy every year and I love the blogs and podcasts that give us so much wonderful information.

I always enjoy these pod-casts! I listened tonight while I made pie doughs for Thanksgiving. As the wife of a Calabrian I am always looking for authentic recipes. My mother-in-law taught me many by the "watch and learn" method, which Rosetta spoke about, but sadly she passed away many years ago. I am always looking for the elusive baby eggplants stuffed with a potato bread mixture that my husband's town in Reggio Calabria makes. It seems they are very specific to his town, and a few nearby, like Siderno. I try many combinations but nothing tastes as good as what my mother-in-law made. They also make a semolina flour and potato yeast dough bread which they twist around an anchovy and fry. It was a savory holiday treat, and so good! I'd love to win Rosetta's cookbook as I'd love to learn more about preserving foods. It's definitely on my amazon.com wish list for Christmas!

I love the idea of recipes with simple ingredients and easy to make. I love cooking and want to keep learning different regional dishes of Italy besides what I learned from my own Italian family. I have some dried peperoncini from my garden and I just don't know what to do with it! Help!!! I need this cookbook!

My interest is in understanding the regional differences of Italian cuisine. Calabrian cooking seems to be very unique and, as in many other regions, dictated by local ingredients. It is great that there are authors who are willing to focus and deal in depth with regional specialties rather than try to cover more recipe geography just to appeal to a broader base of readers/cooking enthusiasts. We need more books like Rosetta's!

My next trip to Italy will be to Calabria so I can't wait to discover what's in store for me. Where should I go, what should I look for when I'm there? I'm very curious to know what are those ingredients that every Calabrian cook should have in her/his pantry. As a fan of salumi, this aspect of the regional cuisine intrigues me. As a lover of eggplant, I would love to learn more about the ubiquitous preserved eggplant.

Just found your podcast and listening to Episode 19 re: traveling under State Department Warning. I agree that you should make your informed decision...my husband and I traveled to India one month after the Mumbai bombings in 2008. We had already purchased tickets, got immunizations, visas, etc, plus we were flying out of Mumbai. In the end, we decided not to change plans or take a detour, and just used caution and common sense when we there. All was fine, and Mumbai was probably under more security at that point because of the alerts.

I visited Rome, Panzano and Florence recently and fell in love with the different cuisines of the areas. I have tried to reproduce some of the dishes that I experienced in Italy and have had some successes. Having a first taste of Italy, I would love to experience more of the varied local traditional dishes prior to my eventual return to Italy. Calabria would be a perfect place to learn about the cuisine of southern Italy and how the local produce there influences the local cooking.

Living in Louisiana, we eat things that most people are not familiar with such as crawfish, boudin, gumbo, jambalaya, couche-couche just to name a few. Therefore I feel that I can appreciate the variety of foods that Calabrians are noted for.

Love the mentions of Palazzo Davanzati and Museo Stibbert....these are gems that are so uncrowded and too often overlooked. Keep up the excellent work Alexandra.

I think Tiziano Ferro's voice would have been better than my overdub voice on this Bronzino video, but I'm happy that your viewers will see this video review of a really great exhibit!

I think we need to tell people that the profile photo I sent in with this interview is a bit of a joke - taken while i was walking down the street by my dad who was playing with his telephoto lens!

And finally, inspired by your question about "other" museums in Florence, I wrote a whole post, so listeners can get the full deal here: http://www.turismo.intoscana.it/allthingstuscany/tuscanyarts/other-museums-in-florence/

Thanks again ladies for including me in the show!

@Italian Postcards - I love Obika myself, but he can't eat cheese so I'd say Obika is out :) Plus I don't find it inexpensive at all - rather, I find it a bit of a splurge to be honest (salads for 12 euro?), but I enjoy going and eating there.

Bon Noir Christina, I love France & Italy and you are covering them BOTH~what could be better?
I love your fresh take on traveling in Europe as my family roots come from Italy, Germany, Ireland and England.
I spent 5 weeks traveling through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Italy 3 years ago and my heart is still on "fire" to return once again to rekindle the flame!
I would warmly welcome a mocha pot into my "cucina"~I would make my grandmother very proud indeed!
Thank you and it is a pleasure to know you and I look to making my plans for a near future visit. (I'm hoping!)

Sincerely Yours,
Debra Syfert

I recommend Obika-Mozzarella Bar in Milan. It's a yummy and inexpensive place to eat. Plus it's a whole smorgasbord of salads and mozzarella, what more could you want?
